Kids Shorts with Pockets

What you will need / Necesitarás:
- 0.5 m cotton fabric / 0,5 m tejido de algodón
- 2.5 cm wide elastic band / elástico de 2,5 cm de ancho
- Matching threads / bobina de hilo al tono
- Sewing machine & overlocker (if you have) / Máquina de coser y remalladora (si tienes).
- Sewing kit (scissors, pins, needle, threads... ) / Caja de Costura (tijera, alfileres, aguja, hilos...)
First, print the pattern and cut it out.
En primer lugar imprime el patrón y recórtalo.
Place the pattern pieces on top of the folded fabric, to get 2 layers of each, and pin.
Coloca las piezas del patrón sobre la tela doble, para obtener 2 capas de cada y sujétalas con alfileres.
Cut the 2 layers of fabric around the patterns. 1cm seam allowance is already included.
Corta las 2 capas de tela alrededor de los patrones, que ya tienen incluidos 1cm de costura.
We start sewing the 2 front panels at the centre front seam, at 1 cm.
Empezamos por coser las dos piezas delanteras por el centro delantero, a 1 cm de costura.
Now place the front pieces of the pockets in place, and stitch around the line, right side to right side, as seen in the images below.
Ahora coloca las piezas frontales de los bolsillos en su lugar, derecho con derecho, y cose alrededor de la línea como se puede ver aquí:
Make notches at the curve to help turning inside out.
Haz unos piquetes en la curva para que sea más fácil darle la vuelta.
Top stitch the seam towards the pocket side, at 0.25 cm from the seam.
Dobla la costura hacia el lado del bolsillo y cose a 0,25 cm de la costura anterior, estirando bien las telas para que no queden pellizcos.
When you turn it inside out it will look like this:
Cuando le des la vuelta te quedará así:
You can do an additional top stitch from the outside of the pocket to make it look more finished, at 0.5 cm, as seen below.
Le puedes hacer otra costura adicional a 0,5 cm por la parte exterior del bolsillo para que se vea más acabado, como puedes ver aquí abajo:
Now you can place the backing part of the pocket on top of the front, and stitch at 1cm around the rounded edge plus the straight line at the side seam until the edge of the pocket.
Ahora puedes colocar la parte trasera del bolsillo encima de la delantera, y coserlas a 1 cm por toda la parte redondeada más la línea recta que queda en la costura lateral, hasta el filo del bolsillo.
Take the back pieces and stitch them together through the Centre Back.
It's now time to overlock the seams we have already stitched before we continue:Centre Front, Centre Back and pockets. If you haven't got an overlocker you can make a simple zig-zag stitch with your sewing machine.
Ahora toca remallar las costuras que hemos hecho hasta ahora, centro delantero, centro trasero y bolsillos. Si no tienes remalladora puedes hacer una costura en zig-zag con la máquina de coser.
Now you can place the front and back panels together, right side to right side, and stitch at 1 cm the two side seams.
Ahora encaramos delantero y trasero, derecho con derecho, y cosemos a 1cm las dos costuras laterales.
The next step would be to stitch the inseam.
El siguiente paso sería coser el tiro.
Pin the two sides together matching the centre front and centre back seams. Next, stitch at 1 cm and overlock.
Sujeta con alfileres las dos partes alineando bien las costuras del centro delantero y centro trasero, a continuación coser a 1 cm y remallar la costura.
Most seams are now done and it's time to press them with the iron.
Ya tenemos la mayoría de las costuras terminadas y es momento de plancharlas para queden bien asentadas.
Press the hemline 1 cm upwards and then another centimetre up.
Aprovechamos la plancha para hacer el dobladillo, plancharemos la línea del dobladillo 1 cm hacia arriba y a continuación otro centímetro.
Now that we are in the ironing board we can also fold the waistband piece in half and press.
Aprovecharemos el momento también para planchar la pieza de la cinturilla por la mitad a lo largo.
Come back to the sewing machine and top stitch the hemline.
Note: it could be hand-stitched with invisible seam but I don't find it very convenient for kids clothing that you have to keep watching once and again.
Volvemos a la máquina de coser y hacemos un pespunte para sujetar el dobladillo.
Nota: se podría hacer el dobladillo a mano con una puntada invisible, pero no me parece muy práctico para la ropa de niños que hay que estar lavando constantemente. Mejor una costura a máquina más resistente.
Once the main shorts are finished, we are going to proceed to make the waistband.
Ahora que ya tenemos la parte principal de los shorts acabada, vamos a proceder con la cinturilla.
First, measure the kid's waist and cut and stitch the elastic band endings at the same measurement.
You can also take the measure reference from another good-fitting pair of trousers.
Stitch the waistband endings together to get a round piece, right side to right side.
Top stitch the fabric piece of waistband along the folding, at 0.5 cm, as seen above.
En primer lugar mide la cintura del niño y corta y cose los extremos del elástico a la misma medida.
También puede usar como referencia la medida de cinturilla de otro pantalón que le quede bien.
Cose los extremos de la cinturilla para convertirla en una pieza redonda, derecho con derecho.
Haz un pespunte por el doblez de la pieza de tela de la cinturilla a lo largo del doblez, a 0,5cm, como se puede ver en la foto superior.
Place the elastic band inside the waistband, like a sandwich, matching the seams. The fabric waistband will be bigger than the elastic band, so it will look gathered.
Introduce la cinta elástica en el interior de la cinturilla, como un sándwich, haciendo coincidir las costuras. La cinturilla de tela es más grande que el elástico para que quede fruncida.
Close the sandwich and pin, then start stitching at 0.75 cm / 1cm from the edge, but mind the elastic band, don't stitch it together.
Cierra el sandwich y sujétalo con un alfiler, después empieza a coser a 0,75 o 1cm del borde, pero ten cuidado con el elástico no lo pises con la costura.
As the elastic band is smaller than the waistband, start gathering the fabric while stitching, at the same time. Once you finish the whole seam you will get a gathered waistband with a hidden elastic band inside.
Como el elástico es más pequeño que la cinturilla, ve frunciendo la tela al mismo tiempo que vas cosiendo. Una vez que hayas terminado toda la costura, te quedará una cinturilla fruncida con el elástico escondido en el interior.
It's now time to join the waistband and the shorts together. Pin the 2 centre backs together, so the seam lines match. Stretch the elastic waistband and stitch, right side to right side.
Ahora ya podemos coser la cinturilla a los shorts. Sujeta con un alfiler los dos centros traseros, de manera que las costuras quedan alineadas. Ve estirando la cinturilla elástica al mismo tiempo que vas cosiendo, derecho con derecho.
Once you have finished sewing, overlock the seam all around the seam.
Una vez que hayas terminado de coserla, remalla toda la costura.
Now the shorts are done, you can leave them as they are, but we are going to make a bow for girls... Add it if you like!
Ahora ya tenemos los shorts terminados y los puedes dejar así. A continuación le vamos a añadir un lazo para darle un toque más femenino para niña, pero es cuestión de gustos!
Cut a strip 52-54 cm long and 8 cm wide.
Corta una tira de 52-54 cm de largo, y 8 cm de ancho.
Fold in half, right side inside, and stitch at 1 cm from the edge.
Use a safety pin to turn it inside out and press with the iron.
To finish up the endings, introduce 1 cm of fabric inside the strip and make a top stitch.
Dobla la tira por la mitad con el derecho hacia dentro y cose a 1 cm del borde.
Usa un imperdible para darle la vuelta a la tira, y después plánchala. Termina los extremos metiendo 1 cm de tela hacia dentro y cosiendo con un pespunte exterior.
Trick: To get a beautiful bow, don't fold in half but leave one side 2 or 3 cm longer than the other. Then stitch the centre point to the waistband centre front with a strong stitching.
Truco: para que te quede el lazo bonito, no dobles la tira por la mitad sino que debes dejar un lado unos 2 o 3 cm más largo que el otro. Después cose el centro de la tira al centro delantero de la cinturilla con un pespunte fuerte.
To tie the bow, start folding the short side first!
Para atar el lazo, empieza por doblar el lado corto primero!
