DIY: Kids Tent (makeover)

Kids play tent makeover from a ready-to-buy Tiger Store tent 

THE FINAL RESULT

I have made this beautiful, feminine yet simple fabric play tent for my girls, from a ready-to-buy kids tent from Tiger Store. I really liked it for them to play but the original colour and design didn't match very well the rest of the room and house decoration, so I decided to change its look by making a new fabric design and recycling the original structure. 

He hecho esta bonita cabaña de juegos, femenina pero sencilla, para mis niñas a partir de una tienda comprada (y regalada por mi cuñao ;-) en Tiger. Me gustaba mucho para guardar los juguetes y que jugaran dentro pero el color y el diseño original no pegaban mucho con el resto de la decoración del dormitorio y de la casa en general. Y como me gusta tanto un DIY decidí hacerle una tela nueva aprovechando la estructura original. 

THE ORIGINAL

¡Oh no! Se me olvidó hacer una foto del "antes" pero aquí podéis ver unas fotos del día de Reyes donde se aprecia cómo era antes... verde oscura con temática del bosque. 

 THE MAKEOVER PROCESS 

MATERIALS:

• Big piece of main fabric, aprox 6 or 7 m, or assorted coordinated fabrics. 
• Assorted bias binding and trimmings. 
• Matching threads. 
• sewing machine and sewing kit. 

MATERIALES:

• Pieza grande de la tela principal, aprox. 6 o 7 m, o varias telas coordinadas. 
• Cinta al bies y decoraciones variadas al gusto. 
• Hilos del color a juego. 
• Máquina de coser y caja de costura. 

I'm very sorry this time I can't explain an easy to follow step-by-step tutorial because I didn't even know how was I going to make it! It has been a trial-and-error process and I have applied a "common sense" method by looking very carefully at the original tent, taking measurements and trying to copy the pattern. Basically this is what you have to do: Look at the original tent, pay attention to its shape and building system, take all the measurements and copy the pattern to cut the fabric you have chosen. You will only have to make the fabric cover as you will remove and use again the original structure. 

Basically there are 3 main parts:

• The ceiling is made from 7 triangles that you have to cut and stitch together. Take the measurements of these triangles on the original tent. 
• A round floor. You will have to measure the diameter of the tent and remember some maths calculations.... the circle perimeter is 2𝛑R. 
• the walls are made from only one rectangle: width = circle perimeter. The windows will be opened at the two sides of the door. You will have to sew the walls to the floor and ceiling leaving the opening at the front to make the door. 
• Always remember to add 1.5 cm seam allowance in every piece. 

Siento mucho que esta vez no os puedo explicar un sencillo tutorial paso a paso de cómo hacer esta tienda, o cabaña o como la queráis llamar, ya que ni yo misma sabía cómo la iba a hacer! Básicamente ha sido un proceso de prueba y error y he aplicado un poco de sentido común, observando bien la tienda original, fijándome cómo estaba hecha, de qué piezas se componía, tomando medidas y copiando el patrón. En definitiva esto es lo que tendrás que hacer: observa bien la tienda que tienes comprada, toma medida de todas las piezas y copia el patrón en la tela que hayas elegido. Sólo tendrás que hacer lo que es de tela, ya que después vamos a desmontar y utilizar la estructura original. 

En definitiva se compone de 3 partes:

• El tejado está compuesto de 7 cuñas iguales que hay que cortar y coser entre si. Toma las medidas de estas cuñas en la tienda original. 
• Una base redonda que hace de suelo, y que se calcula midiendo el diámetro de la tienda y recordando un poco de matemáticas... el perímetro de la circunferencia es igual a 2𝞹R. 
• Las paredes están hechas de una sola pieza rectangular que mide de ancho = perímetro de la circunferencia de la base. Abriremos las ventanas a cada lado de la puerta. Coseremos estas paredes en redondo dejando la abertura en el frente para hacer de puerta. 
• Siempre debes añadir 1,5 cm de costura a todas las piezas. 

To open the windows you only have to cut out symmetrical squares at both sides, and bind them with the bias. Add a cross in the middle to finish the windows. 

Para abrir las ventanas solo hay que recortar 2 cuadrados simétricos, uno a cada lado, y rematarlo con la cinta al bies que hayas elegido. Añade una cruz en el medio para terminar la ventana. 

To get the door finished, simply add a bias binding at both sides of the rectangle, and stitch together 2 or 3 cm at the top, leave the rest open. 

Para rematar la puerta hay que coserle la cinta al bies elegida a cada extremo del rectángulo que hacen las paredes, y coser unos 2 o 3 cm arriba, dejar abierto el resto. 

You can also add some nice trimming to the door if you like, you only have to stitch it on top of the bias binding. 

Después podéis añadir un adorno como éste de madroños a vuestro gusto. Simplemente pespuntear encima del bies. 

 Below you can see the process of trying on the new project on top of the original tent, in order to adjust the measurements.

A continuación tenéis cómo hay que probar nuestro nuevo proyecto encima de la tienda original, para comprobar y ajustar medidas en caso de tener que hacer rectificaciones. 

Finally, you will have to join the different parts together: the basement to the walls (leaving an opening at the door) and the walls to the ceiling. In both cases join the pieces using a bias binding and leaving a 1cm space to be able to introduce the wire of the structure. Leave the extremes open to insert the wire. 

Finalmente hay que coser las distintas piezas entre sí: el suelo a las paredes (dejando la zona de la puerta abierta) y las paredes al tejado, en ambos casos unir con cinta al bies dejando un hueco de 1 cm de ancho todo alrededor para poder meter el alambre que lleva la estructura para mantener la forma de cabaña. Dejar los extremos sin rematar para poder introducir dicho alambre. 

Once all the pieces are stitched and the fabric project finished, it's time to remove the wires from the original tent and insert them in the new one. 

Una vez que tienes toda la parte de tela cosida y terminada, es el momento de quitar los alambres y palitos de la tienda original y ponérselos a la nueva.
